Richard Gale, Director of the Mount Royal University Institute for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Described Although the term “scholarship of teaching and learning” has become much more prominent within the higher education community, there is still a great deal of variation in how this work is defined, described, and practiced. This session provides a working definition and shared understanding of what we mean by scholarship of teaching and learning … its history and practice, its challenges and opportunities.

Alexander McCormick, Director of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) SoTL's Connection to Surveys of Student Engagement Tom Laird, Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) Project Manager SoTL's Connection to Surveys of Student Engagement Scholarship of teaching and learning need not be seen as an isolated activity. In fact, systematic scholarly inquiry into student learning often has its greatest impact when conducted in collaboration with other programmatic, institutional, and trans-institutional initiatives. In this session, our two keynote presenters will discuss how large-scale projects like the National Survey of Student Engagement and the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement can work in tandem with campus scholarship of teaching and learning investigations.

This session is designed to provide participants with a better understanding of how this research agenda operates within individual institutional contexts, and in association with campus missions and mandates.

Joy Mighty, President of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) Alexander McCormick, Director of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) SoTL's Connection to Surveys of Student Engagement Richard Gale, Director of the Mount Royal University Institute for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning The Canadian post-secondary landscape is unique, requiring as it does a balancing of (often competing) local, provincial, national, and international agendas. This session offers individuals with unique perspectives and expertise, addressing how scholarship of teaching and learning functions within and between these very different contexts. Presenters will draw on their own experiences, as well as the events of the Forum, to bridge the work of often-isolated initiatives and agendas, and make connections with Forum participants.
